Who am I?
My academic background is on Mathematics, holding three degrees by the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto: BSc in Mathematics – Educational branch, MSc in Mathematics – Foundations and Applications, and PhD in Applied Mathematics.
I am a BioImage Analyst at INEB / i3S (Instituto Nacional de Engenharia Biomédica / Instituto de Investigação e Inovação em Saúde). In my professional activities interacted with >60 collaborators, resulting in the co-authorship of 17 scientific papers, and I am the core developer of several software applications. I participate and/or participated in 6 R&D Projects (one of which as co-PI) and supervise(d) 6 MSc dissertations. I am the principal organizer of the HEROHE grand-challenge with >800 participants.
My main research interests are in the development and application of software for mathematical modeling, simulation and data analysis for the study of biological processes. Over the years, I developed models and bioinformatics tools on bioimage analysis, neurosciences, population and forensic genetics, or genomics. Presently, the most relevant part of my work is focused in blending standard bioimage analysis techniques with innovative image science and computer vision algorithms to create novel mathematical models and deploy software applications in bioimage analysis, from basic biological sciences to medical diagnosis and therapeutic.
